Ingredients

Scale

For the Ground Beef Orzo:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey, chicken, or plant-based meat)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup uncooked orzo
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth (or chicken broth)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Garnishing:

  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Chopped fresh parsley or basil

Instructions

  • Cook the beef: In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Once cooked through, drain excess fat.
  • Sauté the vegetables: Add the diced onion and garlic to the skillet, cooking until softened and fragrant.
  • Add orzo and liquids: Stir in uncooked orzo, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and beef broth. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the orzo is tender (about 10-12 minutes).
  • Finish the sauce: Once the orzo is cooked, stir in the heavy cream, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  • Serve: Garnish with grated Parmesan and fresh parsley or basil. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For a lighter dish, substitute heavy cream with half-and-half or milk.
  • Adjust the spice level by adding more or less red pepper flakes.
  • Swap orzo for rice or another small pasta if preferred.
