This Smothered Chicken Recipe is a flavorful, Southern-style dish featuring tender chicken cooked in a creamy, savory gravy. Perfect for a comforting family dinner, this recipe combines simple ingredients to create a dish that is both hearty and delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup milk or heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Instructions

  • Season the chicken breasts with salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • Dredge the chicken in flour, shaking off any excess.
  • Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  • Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the onion and cook until softened. Add garlic and sauté for another minute.
  • Stir in the remaining flour and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  • Gradually whisk in the chicken broth and milk, cooking until the gravy thickens.
  • Return the chicken to the skillet, spooning the gravy over the top. Simmer for 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through.
  • Serve warm, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk.
  • This dish pairs well with mashed potatoes or rice.
